The History and Evolution of the Oxford Performing Arts Center

Sep 13, 2024

The Oxford Performing Arts Center (OPAC) is housed in a historic building that has served as the Oxford community’ small music venue for nearly a century. Originally constructed in 1921 as an elementary school, it later became the city's government offices and police station. In 2011, the building underwent a significant transformation into the state-of-the-art performing arts venue now known as OPAC. With careful preservation of its historical elements, the center continues to be a cultural cornerstone, offering exceptional arts programming and community engagement for all ages to not only the Oxford community but the larger areas of Birmingham and Atlanta as well.

The Early Days: From School to City Hall

In 1921, our building first opened as Oxford Elementary School. As Oxford grew, the space transitioned to house city offices and later the police department. This building has always been at the heart of the community, serving various needs throughout its rich history.

The Birth of a New Vision

In 2009, with the building vacant for the first time, the Oxford Arts Council proposed transforming it into a performing arts center. This ambitious project sought to preserve the “Grand Old Lady’s” historic features while creating a modern entertainment venue.

The original parts of the building, such as the pine floors and columns, were preserved during the renovation. The expansion, which added a 1,200-seat theater, enabled us to offer state-of-the-art facilities while maintaining the building’s historical charm. The transformation into OPAC ensured that this historic space would continue to serve the community for generations.
